The Position of Islamic Sharia on the Contemporary Feminist Movement
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research examines the position of Islamic Sharia on contemporary feminism by addressing the status of women in Islam, their responsibilities within the family, the main challenges they face, and the major feminist demands that are either compatible or incompatible with Islamic Sharia. It also presents the Islamic approach to addressing these issues. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical methodology to examine feminist ideas in light of the principles and objectives of Islamic Sharia.
The research concludes that Islam has honored women, granted them legitimate rights, and recognized their essential role in building the family and society. It establishes the relationship between men and women on the basis of justice, complementarity, and cooperation. The study also shows that some feminist demands, such as women's education, their right to ownership and lawful employment, and protection from injustice, are fundamentally consistent with Islamic Sharia, despite differences in their intellectual foundations and objectives. However, other demands contradict Islamic Sharia, particularly absolute equality between men and women, objections to certain family regulations, and calls for liberation from religious guidelines.
The research concludes that contemporary feminist issues should be addressed through balanced religious and intellectual awareness, educating women about their rights and responsibilities in Islam, empowering them academically and intellectually, and addressing the real challenges they face. It also emphasizes the role of academic, religious, and media institutions in presenting an informed Islamic discourse that responds to misconceptions, preserves women's dignity and rights, and strengthens family and social stability.
